Updated on June 5, 2023, by Ritwik Mitra: Open-world games have become one of the most popular genres for huge AAA developers to dabble in, developing massive sandboxes that players can get lost in for hours on end as they explore every nook and cranny of the world to see what they can find. These scores are all based on the highest value given from PC to consoles to portables. That’s why some of these games had to stretch the very idea of what makes an open-world game an open-world game. It should come as no surprise then that female heroes aren’t as prominent in this department. The point is the genre is more new than say the RPG or brawler. Compared to other genres in video games, the open-world aspect has pretty much only been around since the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation.
